Wings Over Wine Country Air Show – Field Trip @ Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.
Sep 28 @ 9:00 am – Sep 29 @ 4:00 pm

This is an exciting event with a lot to see and photograph.  From speedy jets to old-fashioned prop planes, parachutists, and walk-about tours of many different types of aircraft, the photographic opportunities are many and varied. Get there early for a front row seat! The event happens both weekend days, and both will count for this field trip.

2019 Sandhill Crane Festival – Field Trip @ Hutchins Street Square
Nov 1 @ 1:00 pm – Nov 3 @ 9:00 pm
Thank you to Jennifer Marano for organizing November’s field trip to the Sandhill Crane Festival in Lodi, CA.  Lodi is a small town near Stockton, about 2 hours from Santa Rosa.  For the past 39 years they have held a festival to celebrate the sandhill cranes that visit the nearby wetlands every winter.  These large birds have interesting behaviors including flying out in the morning and back in the evening in large groups.  This makes them an interesting subject for photographers.
Tours are offered as part of the festival November 1 – 3, many with well known experts on these birds.  Tours require registration in advance and the sooner, the better, to be able to participate in the tour of your choice.  There is a fee for some of them and separately a Lands Pass must be purchased.  Go to https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/licensing/lands-pass for more information on how to purchase the pass. Details can also be found on the festival website (link below).  All tours begin and end at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi.  Check in at the registration table at least 15 minutes before the start of the tour. You will be required to show your pass or license at that time.

NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS SATURDAY NIGHT

Several of us plan to attend the festival in Lodi November 1-3, and have started signing up for tours.  The plan is to go there for a Saturday tour, stay overnight, and do an early morning fly-out tour Sunday morning.  The Festival web site, linked below, has 16 pages of tour descriptions.  The tour I signed up for was already half full.  There are several hotels near central Lodi; see the festival website for details.

Field Trip Zoom Meeting for Napa Lights
Mar 1 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Napa Lights

Where             Napa  Downtown Waterfront

Dates          Visit:                February 2/17-2/23

Upload:            2/26 close

Zoom:              3/1 at 5:00

Description:    The Napa Lighted Art Festival will run this year from 1/15- 3/13, mainly concentrated along the river. It is also fun to shoot the illuminated buildings at dusk, either up close or from across the river. The real photographic treat this year will be shooting giant lit dandelion sculptures at night.

 Details:

Parking should be pretty easy downtown around sunset on a week night.

– Try and get there by the blue hour; sunset that for that period is about 6 pm.

– We all know that weather can be iffy and you have other obligations, so there is a one-week window to shoot.

Dinner:    Dinner is cancelled due to the number of conflicting events and the fact that we would have to eat inside during the continued Covid issue. As the weather warms, and we can eat outside, it will no longer be an issue.

Gear to bring There will be some walking so pack light. As a bare minimum, just bring your walk-around lens and a tele. Don’t forget a tripod because of the low light. Check the forecast before you leave home for clothing selection.

After the outing, please sort through your images that you will post for the Zoom    meeting on 3/1; please have them uploaded by 2/26.

SAMPLE UPLOAD PROCESS

  1. Pick out a max of 5 processed images and upload them to the club’s competition site.
  2. .Prepare these images to the specs you use to upload images for competition; see detailed instructions in the email that was sent out announcing the event.

Pride Parade @ Courthouse Square

Because Tony is traveling, he asked me to “captain” this field trip for him. I recommend arriving early to photograph the scene prior to the parade. We will meet at Courthouse Square at the junction where Fourth Street and Mendocino Avenue meet at 9:00 am. Feel free to dress in your wildest costume. You’ll fit right in!

This is the 36th annual Sonoma County Pride Celebration, returning to downtown Santa Rosa after a two-year absence due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. The 2022 theme is “We Are Family.”

Please let me know if you plan to attend. Hope to see you there!
