About Lisa Rigge

Biography:

Lisa began taking photography courses at the MIT Photography Lab in Cambridge, MA. Once in CA, she continued her photography studies at Chabot College, UC Extension Santa Cruz, and PhotoCentral. Her photographs have appeared in LensWork, The Sun Magazine, and Burningword Literary Magazine.

Philosophy:

Lisa’s background is in Adult Education. She’s taught photography, along with many other subjects, to adults for decades. Thus, she approaches judging as a teacher, believing that first and foremost, everyone needs to be encouraged in their photographic journey. She tries to use a different approach when judging the beginners’ and the more advanced members’ work. She feels beginners absolutely need to know what they are doing well, and the more advanced photographers may need to find ways to further refine their work. It’s important to her that she be able to recognize what the makers were trying to capture when they clicked the shutter button in order to make the best judgements on their photographs.

Lisa also believes that photographers view their photographs as a means of self-expression first, and any need to impress the judge, second. The photographers always have the last word on their work. Hers is just one of many opinions.

These critique sessions really work, particularly for new members and members who have just moved to a higher competition level. More than 18 members have used this service last year. Most of the time, a little tweak really can raise the impact of an image. Usually, the alteration is as simple and impactive as adjusting a crop or editing a title.

As a reminder, here is how the process works:

– Please email me that you would be interested in getting up to 3 of your images reviewed in a session. Also let me know what 10-minute time slot you would like between 4-6 pm

– I will respond relatively promptly and see if we can settle on a mutually convenient time

– No later than 1 day before the appointed evening, send me your images in the same format as you upload to competition

– Also include your phone number and the image titles

– On the appointed time slot, I will call the number you gave me and we can discuss your images

– If I am running more than 5 minutes late, I will text or email you

Zoom Photo Competition with Judge Charles Ginsburgh
Jul 11 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Categories: Pictorial, Nature, Travel, and Critique/Feedback

About Charles Ginsburgh

Biography:

Who is Charlie Ginsburgh (cginsburgh@gmail.com), I am a 65 plus part-time artist, living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am a retired Research Biochemist, spending my career in the creation and support of Medical Diagnostic tests (the things Doctors and Labs use when they “run tests”). However, in my spare time I designed and created Stained Glass panels. Since normally I give away most of my works, in 2011 I chose to generate a catalog to demonstrate my works to others, and this led me into photography. I have been pressing that shutter button ever since.

Philosophy:

What do I look for in images? When it comes to any art form, where there is no right or wrong, how can we judge the value of such submissions? The answer is that we cannot, and my comments are not intended as a value statement. Rather, in my view, we can only offer our comments upon how effective an image is in conveying the maker’s vision.

To me, every image attempts to portray the maker’s vision or story. It is the reason that they pressed the shutter button. It need not be a narrative story but rather an emotional expression or a simple expression of interest. Whatever the story (simple, complex and/or emotional), the goal of the photographer is to poetry that vision within the image. It’s my role to communicate the vision as I see it and to comment upon how effective or ineffective the use of internal elements within the image are in the communication of that vision.

In my personal photography I find that I am attracted to “making the common-place, uncommon” in the world around me and especially in nature within the macro world. I can be in a group of people overlooking a truly magnificent panoramic vista, and darn if I am not most-interested in the little weedy flower-thing nearly buried in the dust at my feet. Macro Photography allows me to express myself in this regard by allowing me to show you things you have already seen, in a way that you may not have experienced before. Examples of my images can be found within my personal site at charlie-g.sumgmug.com.
