Napa Lights
Where Napa Downtown Waterfront
Dates Visit: February 2/17-2/23
Upload: 2/26 close
Zoom: 3/1 at 5:00
Description: The Napa Lighted Art Festival will run this year from 1/15- 3/13, mainly concentrated along the river. It is also fun to shoot the illuminated buildings at dusk, either up close or from across the river. The real photographic treat this year will be shooting giant lit dandelion sculptures at night.
Details:
– Parking should be pretty easy downtown around sunset on a week night.
– Try and get there by the blue hour; sunset that for that period is about 6 pm.
– We all know that weather can be iffy and you have other obligations, so there is a one-week window to shoot.
Dinner: Dinner is cancelled due to the number of conflicting events and the fact that we would have to eat inside during the continued Covid issue. As the weather warms, and we can eat outside, it will no longer be an issue.
Gear to bring There will be some walking so pack light. As a bare minimum, just bring your walk-around lens and a tele. Don’t forget a tripod because of the low light. Check the forecast before you leave home for clothing selection.

Judge: Jane Postiglione
BIOGRAPHY
Jane Postiglione has been shooting images since she received her first Brownie camera at age 11. As an
undergraduate student in Architectural Interior Design at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, Jane shot with
a medium format 2 ¼ Minolta twin lens reflex camera and a hand held light meter, and learned to developed
film and make black and white prints. After receiving her BFA from Pratt, Jane practiced design in New
York City, travelled several times to Europe, and then moved west to study Instructional Technology and

training videos for the Army and the Navy, as well as creating and delivering technology and management
programs for the corporate world. Jane started using digital equipment in 2004.
Jane has won many club awards for her prints and digital images, and has been President of the Contra

the emerging professional. In addition to her fine art photography, Jane shoots weddings and events with
her photographer/musician husband. You can view Jane’s website at: https://photographybypost.com/
PHILOSOPHY
As a Photographer, I believe it is important to consciously select visually interesting subject matter with
appealing compositional elements, shoot at the best time of day to portray the image, use the best technical
parameters to capture the image, and tell the subject’s story,…. capture the subject’s essence,…all while
demonstrating a personal visual style or signature that sets your work apart from
the work of others. I acknowledge that evaluating and judging photography and art is subjective, yet I believe
there are certain universal aesthetic principles and guidelines, which apply to all artwork. For N4C judging I
follow the N4C and PSA rules and definitions.
Where Larkspur Ferry and San Francisco
Dates Visit: March 17 ( 17-20)
Upload: March 23
Zoom: March 25 at 5 pm
Introduction We are still emerging from Covid and have our own individual sense of risk assessment. The flexibility built into this trip is to tailor it to your needs. The write-up below is oriented the people who feel they are less at risk: ride the ferry and get there for early light. On the other hand, if it is more convenient to drive, don’t take the ferry. If people want to go on another day, they can.
Description The main event is scheduled for March 17. The Larkspur ferry will allow participants to leave as early as 6:35 and arrive at the Ferry Building by about 7:10. For those who are challenged by seasickness and decide to drive, there are many parking garages nearby to the Ferry Building. For people who feel that early hours are for the birds, please arrive later. Call around and form your own posse.
Upon early arrival, it is suggested that everyone meet in front of the main Golden Gate Transit Building in the rear of the ferry building. From there, we can break into small groups and go off to explore the area. Later arrivals can check in with Tony (847-778-6989) to find out where the early birds have migrated to.
It is truly a target rich environment:
– meander the ferry building shooting the wares
– sit across the street from the building and capture some of the local fauna moving by
– walk the street and absorb the architecture
– try shooting shadows or movement
– or, when you are aboard, step to the ferry rail, and shoot the prisons, the bridges, boat traffic and the city city from the water
Around 11:30, we will all meet for lunch at Gott’s at the Ferry Building. We can eat outdoors there. After lunch, people can continue shooting or grab a ferry back home. There are 2 return ferries in the afternoon.
Travel light; bring as little as possible so you last longer and are not a target for the occasional bad guy.
And please remember, if the fog is heavy, you are a winner. EVERYTHING is different and more dramatic. Just wear an extra layer of clothes.
Please let me know if you plan to attend.
After the outing, please sort through your images that you will post for the Zoom meeting on the 25th; please have them uploaded by the 23rd.

Our program presentation on March 24 will feature a webinar presented by Harold Davis. He was unable to join us in person this year but has given us permission to show his webinar entitled “Patterns, Abstractions and Composition.” In the webinar Harold discusses the role and progressions of patterns and abstractions in the composition of his work. Mastering patterns and learning to make abstractions is the key to becoming adept at composition. In this presentation Harold examines the role and progressions of patterns and abstractions in the composition of his own work.
Harold Davis is an internationally known photographer and a sought-after workshop leader. He is a Moab Master and a Zeiss Ambassador. He has exhibited widely and his prints are extensively collected. In 2022, several of his images were selected by the United States Post Office for use as postage stamps.

April Critique Night
The next competition is April 14. The critique night for it will be April 3 from 4 – 6 pm. The categories for the competition are: Pictorial, Mono, Travel and Nature.
These critique sessions really work. More than 15 members have used this service this past year. Most of the time, a little tweak really can raise the impact of an image. It may be as simple as adjusting a crop or editing a title. It is super-helpful for new members or members who have just advanced to a higher classification.
As a reminder, here is how the process works:
– Please email me that you would be interested in getting up to 3 of your images reviewed. Also let me know what 10-minute time slot you would like between 4-6 pm
– I will respond relatively promptly and see if we can settle on a mutually convenient time
– No later than 2 days before the appointed evening, send me your images in the same format as you upload to competition
– Also include your phone number and the image titles
– On the appointed time slot, I will call the number you gave me and we can discuss your images
– If I am running more than 5 minutes late, I will text or email you
Tony
