Napa Lights

Where             Napa  Downtown Waterfront

Dates          Visit:                February 2/17-2/23

Upload:            2/26 close

Zoom:              3/1 at 5:00

Description:    The Napa Lighted Art Festival will run this year from 1/15- 3/13, mainly concentrated along the river. It is also fun to shoot the illuminated buildings at dusk, either up close or from across the river. The real photographic treat this year will be shooting giant lit dandelion sculptures at night.

 Details:

Parking should be pretty easy downtown around sunset on a week night.

– Try and get there by the blue hour; sunset that for that period is about 6 pm.

– We all know that weather can be iffy and you have other obligations, so there is a one-week window to shoot.

Dinner:    Dinner is cancelled due to the number of conflicting events and the fact that we would have to eat inside during the continued Covid issue. As the weather warms, and we can eat outside, it will no longer be an issue.

Gear to bring There will be some walking so pack light. As a bare minimum, just bring your walk-around lens and a tele. Don’t forget a tripod because of the low light. Check the forecast before you leave home for clothing selection.

After the outing, please sort through your images that you will post for the Zoom    meeting on 3/1; please have them uploaded by 2/26.

Zoom Photo Competition with Jane Postiglione
Mar 10 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Pictorial, Nature, Travel, Monochrome

Judge: Jane Postiglione

BIOGRAPHY
Jane Postiglione has been shooting images since she received her first Brownie camera at age 11. As an
undergraduate student in Architectural Interior Design at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, Jane shot with
a medium format 2 ¼ Minolta twin lens reflex camera and a hand held light meter, and learned to developed
film and make black and white prints. After receiving her BFA from Pratt, Jane practiced design in New
York City, travelled several times to Europe, and then moved west to study Instructional Technology and
multimedia in graduate school at SF State. This lead to work in writing, shooting and editing instructional
training videos for the Army and the Navy, as well as creating and delivering technology and management
programs for the corporate world. Jane started using digital equipment in 2004.
Jane has won many club awards for her prints and digital images, and has been President of the Contra
Costa Camera Club (Pleasant Hill), and President of the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs
(N4C). In addition to being on the Board of CCCC and N4C, Jane was a past Board Member of the Alamo
Danville Artist Society, and past Director of their Rotating Gallery. She also filled in as Interim Director and
Curator at Sun Gallery in Hayward, Ca. She has shown and sold her work in group and individual shows at
local galleries and establishments. Most recently several of
her images were published in the Best of Photography 2014 in Photographer’s Forum, a magazine for
the emerging professional. In addition to her fine art photography, Jane shoots weddings and events with
her photographer/musician husband. You can view Jane’s website at: https://photographybypost.com/

PHILOSOPHY
As a Photographer, I believe it is important to consciously select visually interesting subject matter with
appealing compositional elements, shoot at the best time of day to portray the image, use the best technical
parameters to capture the image, and tell the subject’s story,…. capture the subject’s essence,…all while
demonstrating a personal visual style or signature that sets your work apart from
the work of others. I acknowledge that evaluating and judging photography and art is subjective, yet I believe
there are certain universal aesthetic principles and guidelines, which apply to all artwork. For N4C judging I
follow the N4C and PSA rules and definitions.

Larkspur Ferry and San Francisco Field Trip
Mar 17 @ 8:57 pm – Mar 20 @ 9:57 pm

Where             Larkspur Ferry and San Francisco

Dates               Visit:                March 17 ( 17-20)

Upload:            March 23

Zoom:              March 25 at 5 pm

Introduction   We are still emerging from Covid and have our own individual sense of risk assessment. The flexibility built into this trip is to tailor it to your needs. The write-up below is oriented the people who feel they are less at risk: ride the ferry and get there for early light. On the other hand, if it is more convenient to drive, don’t take the ferry. If people want to go on another day, they can.

Description     The main event is scheduled for March 17. The Larkspur ferry will allow participants to leave as early as 6:35 and arrive at the Ferry Building by about 7:10. For those who are challenged by seasickness and decide to drive, there are many parking garages nearby to the Ferry Building. For people who feel that early hours are for the birds, please arrive later. Call around and form your own posse.

Upon early arrival, it is suggested that everyone meet in front of the main Golden Gate Transit Building in the rear of the ferry building. From there, we can break into small groups and go off to explore the area. Later arrivals can check in with Tony (847-778-6989) to find out where the early birds have migrated to.

It is truly a target rich environment:

–         meander the ferry building shooting the wares

–         sit across the street from the building and         capture some of the local  fauna moving by

–        walk the street and absorb the architecture

–      try shooting shadows or movement

–     or, when you are aboard, step to the ferry rail, and shoot the prisons, the bridges, boat traffic and the city city from the water

Around 11:30, we will all meet for lunch at Gott’s at the Ferry Building. We can eat outdoors there. After lunch, people can continue shooting or grab a ferry back home. There are 2 return ferries in the afternoon.

Travel light; bring as little as possible so you last longer and are not a target for the occasional bad guy.

And please remember, if the fog is heavy, you are a winner. EVERYTHING is different and more dramatic. Just wear an extra layer of clothes.

Please let me know if you plan to attend.

After the outing, please sort through your images that you will post for the Zoom meeting on the 25th; please have them uploaded by the 23rd.

SAMPLE UPLOAD PROCESS

  1. Pick out a max of 5 processed images and upload them to the club’s competition site.
  2. Prepare these images to the specs that you use to upload images for competition; see detailed instructions below.
  3. All images must be uploaded by midnight March 23rd.
  4. The host (Tony) will arrange them in Lightroom to prepare them for a Zoom meeting at the address shown on the Zoom Meeting tab in the SRPS web site.
  5. Bill Stacy will set up the Zoom meeting and act as co-host. The meeting will start sharp at 5 pm on March  25. There will be 15 minutes of social time.
  6. The host/Tony will show all the images of one person at a time, and they will narrate them. After that, there will be time for comments. Provisionally, each presenter gets a max of 10 minutes for presenting and getting comments.

Uploading            Just like competition, go to the Visual Pursuits site, log in and go to the My Account tab and then to My Galleries

There you will scroll down to Field Trips Discussions; on the right, click on Edit and Upload images……. just like competition.

They then can either be pulled from your Library if you uploaded them there, or directly uploaded by drag and drop. The max is 5 images uploaded.

  1. NOT LIKE COMPETITION, title each of your images as: your last name and the number 1 through 5.

You are now done

Critique Night
Apr 3 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

April Critique Night

The next competition is April 14. The critique night for it will be April 3 from 4 – 6 pm. The categories for the competition are: Pictorial, Mono, Travel and Nature.

These critique sessions really work. More than 15 members have used this service this past year. Most of the time, a little tweak really can raise the impact of an image. It may be as simple as adjusting a crop or editing a title. It is super-helpful for new members or members who have just advanced to a higher classification.

As a reminder, here is how the process works:

        – Please email me that you would be interested in getting up to 3 of your images reviewed. Also let me know what 10-minute time slot you would like between 4-6 pm

        – I will respond relatively promptly and see if we can settle on a mutually convenient time

        – No later than 2 days before the appointed evening, send me your images in the same format as you upload to competition

        – Also include your phone number and the image titles

– On the appointed time slot, I will call the number you gave me and we can discuss your images

– If I am running more than 5 minutes late, I will text or email you

SRPS Rail & Windfarm Field Trip
Apr 9 @ 10:30 am – 1:00 pm

SRPS April 2022 Outing:  Railroads and Windmills

Where             Western Railway Museum

Dates               Visit:                April 9, 2022

Upload:            April 14, 2022

Zoom:              April 15, 2022

Introduction   I went to the Museum last weekend to check it out. The drive was very easy and the traffic was light in the morning. Parking is a breeze and admission was $14. The restrooms were sparkling and there was a snack bar on premises. Staff were really friendly and very helpful. The exhibits, for old-time residents of the Bay Area, are amazing, showing local cities as rural bergs. I even got to ride an electric trolley on a 5-mile track. They even stopped so I could shoot the car from beneath the trestle.

Description     The main event is scheduled for April 9th at 10:30 when the museum opens. The Western Railway Museum is a little jewel that is on Route 12 a little east of Suison. There is a ride, lots of old rail cars and tons of “stuff”. Most definitely a fun place to shoot. In addition, just down the road from there is a giant wind farm where you can get really close to the structures. As an extra, the whole place is hopping with jack rabbits and I saw a fair number of well-fed raptors.

It is about a 60-mile trip to the museum from Petaluma. In the interest of saving gas, ride sharing is suggested. I plan to go on April 9 and hope some of you will join me; we can find a place for lunch on the way home. For everyone else, there will be a 1-week window to shoot from April 2 to April 10th. Images must be uploaded by April 14 and the Zoom meeting will be at 5 pm on April 15.

Since you are going by car, load up whatever equipment you want. The parking area I right next to the entrance. Any lens you bring can be used from macro textures, to tele’s for raptors; to whatever for big sweeping pano’s. But he most important things are sunscreen, hats and water.

Please let me know if you plan to attend.

Information on the follow-up Zoom meeting is posted on the club website.

Zoom Photo Competition with Doug Stinson
Apr 14 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Biography:
Doug has been pursuing photography seriously for over forty years. He started as a contributor to his local newspaper when he was in high school. He is a member of the Photographic Society of America, the Fremont Photographic Society, and the Fremont
Art Association. He studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of PhotoAlliance. His photography has won awards at the local and regional levels and has been exhibited internationally. He created the website BayAreaPhotoScene.com, the definitive, searchable database of photography related events in the Bay Area. In addition to his interest in the aesthetic aspects of photography he brings a knowledge of the technical aspects of digital photography and image analysis from his work with Eastman Kodak and with Hewlett Packard.

Philosophy:
In stating his philosophy, Doug notes, “Humans have been creating images, for no other purpose than to share experiences, for at least 30,000 years. It may be the one thing that truly distinguishes us as a species. The only thing that matters in a photograph is the impact it has on the viewer. If your image has as great an impact as a Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave drawing, you have a great photograph. If a judge can help
you achieve that by assisting you in developing your technique and vision, he or she has done their job.”
