Pride Parade @ Courthouse Square
Jun 4 @ 9:00 am – 11:45 pm

Because Tony is traveling, he asked me to “captain” this field trip for him. I recommend arriving early to photograph the scene prior to the parade. We will meet at Courthouse Square at the junction where Fourth Street and Mendocino Avenue meet at 9:00 am. Feel free to dress in your wildest costume. You’ll fit right in!

This is the 36th annual Sonoma County Pride Celebration, returning to downtown Santa Rosa after a two-year absence due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. The 2022 theme is “We Are Family.”

Please let me know if you plan to attend. Hope to see you there!

Zoom Photo Competition with Dan Katzman
Jun 9 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Categories: Pictorial, Journalism, Creative, Nature

Judge Biography:
Dan is a long time photo judge with experience in local, regional, national, international competitions. He had been a professional fine art photographer specializing in large format work for large public space displays. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Park Service and of several large corporations including Kaiser Permanente. His images have appeared in national media and on book covers.
He has had the good fortune of being taught architectural, landscape, commercial tabletop and portrait photography by some excellent photographers.

Philosophy:
His judging philosophy starts with the idea that the primary focus of club judging should be on teaching. This starts with identifying what club members can learn from what is right with the image under discussion. A typical follow up is to offer ideas on how to take the image to the next level. Use of light and the emotional or storytelling aspects of an image should be discussed as much as composition. In cases where there are multiple technical faults with an image, he tries to focus on the one or two most important rather than enumerating all of the faults. This gives the beginning photographer a better chance to remember the comments and to put them in use the next time they are out photographing. Dan believes that photography is an artform that can be closely related to European painting and drawing and that the critique can be informed by appreciation of classical art.

This link was not generated by the Zoom Scheduling plugin that we believe is the cause of our problems joining and re-joining meetings.

Use this link and if you have any problems, be sure to take a screenshot of what appears. If no one has problems using this link. it gives more evidence that the plugin is the problem. It will also support the fixes we will be considering in today’s board meeting.

Presentation by Keith French
Jun 23 @ 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Note: To bypass problems rejoining Zoom meetings, the Zoom link has been re-generated directly from the Zoom account, and appears below.

=======================================

The Zoom portal opens at 6 pm and the meeting starts at 6:30.

Our meeting will consist of a presentation from Keith French:

“How to use and interpret your camera’s light meter”

Keith French will delve into Light Metering and the role it plays in your photography; how to use and interpret the information your camera gives you, and how to turn that info into a usable exposure.

Keith French has been a full time professional photographer since 2001 with an extensive background in several types of photography dating back to 1984 when he first started a color darkroom in his home.  His years as an owner of a full service retail camera store, Photo/Video studio, and commercial color and B & W photo lab in the Chicago suburbs, gave him a unique look into the full circle of the photographic industry. Buying and selling equipment and accessories, hosting and teaching photography classes and workshops, shooting and running a commercial photo lab.  The majority of the last 12 years Keith has concentrated his work on B2B commercial photography, helping companies to visually communicate their product and services in their market through outstanding images. These past experiences combined with his time as a United States Marine Corps Aviator and the travels that were associated there, Keith has a well-rounded repertoire of photographic experience on 4 continents and 3 oceans.

With these photographic experiences and his enjoyment of teaching and being around people passionate for the art and science of photography, Keith brings a unique combination of fun and knowledge to his workshops and classes. His previous teaching opportunities includes novices to advanced amateurs through his camera store, with the Chicago Area Photography School (CAPS) and as a presenter and photo walk host with Out of Chicago. Also in keeping with his passion for teaching  Keith hosts or co-hosts,  with partner Tony Reynes, numerous workshops both locally in the Chicago area as well as several destination workshops in North Dakota, Colorado, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Southern Illinois.

Critique Night
Jul 3 @ 10:51 pm – 11:51 pm

The next competition is on July 14. The critique night for it will be July 3 from 4 – 6 pm. The categories for the competition are: Pictorial, Travel and Nature.

These critique sessions really work. More than 15 members have used this service last year. Most of the time, a little tweak really can raise the impact of an image. It may be as simple as adjusting a crop or editing a title. It is super-helpful for new members or members who have just advanced to a higher classification.

As a reminder, here is how the process works:

        – Please email me that you would be interested in getting up to 3 of your images reviewed. Also let me know what 10-minute time slot you would like between 4-6 pm

        – I will respond relatively promptly and see if we can settle on a mutually convenient time

        – No later than 2 days before the appointed evening, send me your images in the same format as you upload to competition

        – Also include your phone number and the image titles

– On the appointed time slot, I will call the number you gave me and we can discuss your images

– If I am running more than 5 minutes late, I will text or email you

SRPS Field Trip Update

Overview

First off, a thank you to the people who sent me their response to the questionnaire; it is not too late to put in your two cents…..I attached a copy to this email.

As promised, the field trips for the club are going to be published on a three-month rolling basis. This will allow members to plan ahead and carpool together if they choose. In general, there will be two trips a month with an optional third one possibly thrown in. All of these trips will be eligible for adding images to the end of month Zoom meeting.

The time/date for each event is finite either because it happens one a specific date or because that way members can plan an event get-together. For those who can’t attend on the given date, just set up a convenient one for yourself that is close to the suggested date.

The end of month Zoom meeting will occur on the last Friday of the month at 5 pm. Now that this meeting will cover 2-3 events. A max of 6 images total will be allowed in the interest of saving time. Image prep and upload procedure has not changed. The meeting will be recorded so any member of the club can revisit the images later. As a reminder, these images that are there to be shared, not there to be critiqued.

The rolling schedule for the next 3 months will also appear on the club calendar.
