2019 Wounded Veterans Polo Benefit @ Wine Country Polo Club (Oakmont)
Aug 18 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

What to expect.

11:00. We’ll meet in the parking lot next to the field. You can park there free of charge and there is no admission charge.

11:30. Opening Ceremonies – showing of the colors. Military procession led by a piper.  This is also a good time to photograph polo ponies getting ready – tail braiding and so forth in the parking area to the north of the field, behind the restaurant.

12:00 First polo match. A typical match consists of four periods of 7 minutes, each followed by a short break for the players to change ponies. The action is fast-paced. Pick your spot and use a long lens. No matter where you are, they will soon gallop within range. Above all, stay off the field during the matches.

There will be a total of two polo matches with an intermission performance by the California Cowgirls Rodeo Drill Team. At some point guests will wander out on the field, wine glass in hand, and “stomp divots.” At the end, some award ceremonies.

Permission to photograph. Bill enjoys free and friendly access to the Wine Country Polo Club activities by providing a website address where members of the polo club  can download small format images and, if they wish, order prints, framed or otherwise. If you have a similar website Bill can pass on the details to the organizers. The more the merrier. If you do not, no problem. Enjoy the day and feel free to mingle among the guests and take lots of pictures.

Finally, please let Bill know as soon as possible if you plan to attend so he can keep the organizers informed.

What to bring: camera gear, water, and a few snacks.  We’ll be in the open sun, so bring sunscreen.

2019 Sandhill Crane Festival – Field Trip @ Hutchins Street Square
Nov 1 @ 1:00 pm – Nov 3 @ 9:00 pm
Thank you to Jennifer Marano for organizing November’s field trip to the Sandhill Crane Festival in Lodi, CA.  Lodi is a small town near Stockton, about 2 hours from Santa Rosa.  For the past 39 years they have held a festival to celebrate the sandhill cranes that visit the nearby wetlands every winter.  These large birds have interesting behaviors including flying out in the morning and back in the evening in large groups.  This makes them an interesting subject for photographers.
Tours are offered as part of the festival November 1 – 3, many with well known experts on these birds.  Tours require registration in advance and the sooner, the better, to be able to participate in the tour of your choice.  There is a fee for some of them and separately a Lands Pass must be purchased.  Go to https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/licensing/lands-pass for more information on how to purchase the pass. Details can also be found on the festival website (link below).  All tours begin and end at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi.  Check in at the registration table at least 15 minutes before the start of the tour. You will be required to show your pass or license at that time.

NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS SATURDAY NIGHT

Several of us plan to attend the festival in Lodi November 1-3, and have started signing up for tours.  The plan is to go there for a Saturday tour, stay overnight, and do an early morning fly-out tour Sunday morning.  The Festival web site, linked below, has 16 pages of tour descriptions.  The tour I signed up for was already half full.  There are several hotels near central Lodi; see the festival website for details.

The website for the Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival tours is https://cranefestival.com/tours.php.

Lake Sonoma Steelhead Festival @ Lake Sonoma Fish Hatchery
Feb 8 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Here’s a local journalistic opportunity. The Steelhead Festival happens when the fish are running. The event is free and offers exhibits, tours, fishing, art projects, archery, a bubble show, food trucks, wine and beer, and live music by Heartwood Crossing. We’ll meet for lunch at noon and see if we can find a picnic area. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch if you’d prefer not to buy food from one of the trucks.

Dogs are discouraged due to the large size of the event and the number of children and strollers.
