Photo Competition with Stephen Hinchey
Sep 8 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Zoom portal opens at 6 pm and the meeting starts at 6:30.

Categories: Pictorial, Nature, Travel, Monochrome, and Non-Compete

Biography:
Stephen Hinchey began his photographic journey in the 1960’s when his brother built a darkroom in the basement of their house. He learned how to develop and expose black & white film. His focus at that time was on architectural images, later adding both color prints and color slides to his repertoire. In the early 2000’s, he purchased his first digital camera and pivoted to Nature
photography. He took classes at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite and interspersed trips to the Sierras. To address his fears of photographing people, he signed up for sessions with models. This led him to shift more to studio work where he can control and experiment with lighting.

Philosophy:
It is important to understand the message the creator of an image is trying to express. The title is a guide in this understanding, reinforcing what you have seen or guiding you to the true message. When talking about the impact and interest in an image Stephen strives to be judicious in suggesting alterations. Often it is better to explain what the creator did to make the image work.

Field Trip Willits: Roots of Motive Power
Sep 10 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Willits Roots of Motive
For those of you who have not been to Willits, or the Railroad
Museum there here is a brief introduction I hope will help you.
Willits is approximately an hour and 40 minutes headed north
on 101. You will want to get off the hwy and take 20 to get to
the town. Follow 20 until you see E. Commercial ST and turn
right there. You will pass the Skunk Train and then Recreation
Grove Park on your right before you get to the Museum on
your right. The Railroad area is near the Museum. Many of you
have been there, but for those of you who have not expect to
find engines and railcars all kept in excellent condition.
There will also be a variety of steam equipment. The yard is
mostly gravel with a few shaded building with displays. Expect
it to get hot and carry water with you.
The park is across the street and offers cool shade if you
find you are getting overheated. The museum is also a cool
place with many exhibits of interest.

Critique Night
Oct 2 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

These critique sessions really work. More than 15 members have used this service last year. Most of the time, a little tweak really can raise the impact of an image. It may be as simple as adjusting a crop or editing a title. It is super-helpful for new members or members who have just advanced to a higher classification.

As a reminder, here is how the process works:

– Please post a reply here (or email me) that you would be interested in getting up to 3 of your images reviewed. Also let me know what 10-minute time slot you would like between 4-6 pm

– I will respond relatively promptly and see if we can settle on a mutually convenient time

– No later than 2 days before the appointed evening, send me your images in the same format as you upload to competition

– Also include your phone number and the image titles

– On the appointed time slot, I will call the number you gave me and we can discuss your images

– If I am running more than 5 minutes late, I will text or email you
